I was homeless in New Orleans for years and learned a great lesson about people. Those areas where people of color and the poor were the ones to give you hand up. I stayed around New Orleans East, read (Chief Highway Bank) a previous story. Those people were the ones that treated me like I was family.
If I were to go where the rich folks were I would end up hungry and without bus fare to get back to New Orleans East. I have gave much thought to why this was so and think it is because those that were poor, knew with their heart what I was feeling and going through and the rich only read about hunger and homelessness. The difference was Experience.
I hope the world can learn from this pandemic one thing and that is that no one is immune from the virus. The same holds true for poverty. You may think you are above and beyond the clutching grip of poverty but like the depression did there are possibilities that the world as we know it today could fold and level the playing field where all are truly created equal.
I hope we never experience such a catastrophe, but I think it wise to run that scenario through your mind before you turn your back on those in need.
